Natural England Raises Serious Concerns

Natural England has raised serious concerns about the proposed industrial development near Taylors Farm, Takeley, emphasizing the risks it poses to the nearby Hatfield Forest Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and National Nature Reserve (NNR). The proposal could severely impact one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval hunting forests. Key points against the development include:

  1. Threat to Hatfield Forest’s Unique Ecosystem: Located just 200 meters from the site, Hatfield Forest’s sensitive environment is at risk from increased air pollution caused by the anticipated rise in HGV traffic. This could degrade the delicate habitat, including ancient woodlands, which are already vulnerable to pollutants.
  2. Increased Air Pollution: Natural England highlights the potential for significant air quality deterioration due to heavy vehicle emissions. Even a modest increase in daily HGV traffic could push pollution levels beyond acceptable thresholds, endangering both the forest and public health.
  3. Inadequate Water Management Risks: Plans to use underground tanks instead of sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) could jeopardize the Shermore Brook, which flows directly into Hatfield Forest. There is no guarantee that these tanks will effectively prevent water contamination, potentially harming the forest’s hydrological integrity.
  4. Loss of Green Buffer Zone: The proposal undermines the Countryside Protection Zone (CPZ) around Stansted Airport, eroding the green buffer that shields Hatfield Forest from industrial encroachment. Moving the development eastward, away from the forest, is a viable alternative that could protect this critical green space.

Natural England’s stance makes it clear that the potential environmental damage far outweighs any economic benefits. Opponents of the development can cite these concerns to emphasize the need for preserving the ecological, historical, and recreational value of Hatfield Forest.
